Dressed in skins, hawk feathers and bead necklaces, they go about the business of their daily lives, hunting, traveling, talking - and sometimes stopping to stare silently across thousands of years.
They are members of ancient peoples, brought back to life by St. Augustine artist, Theodore Morris who has dedicated himself to researching and recording Lost Tribes of Florida. He has chronicled Native Americans who lived in Florida as many as 13,000 years ago, but who look in his paintings as if they might have just pulled their boat through the mangroves and come in from the pinewoods.

He became the 26th president of the United States after the assassination of William McKinley, on September 14, 1901. He was re-elected in 1904 and served until 1909. After the United States went to war against Spain in Cuba, Roosevelt organized a volunteer cavalry regiment known as the "Rough Riders." He served as Lieutenant Colonel under Commander Leonard Wood. Because of transportation problems, their horses had to be abandoned in Tampa, Florida, and thus they fought mostly on foot when they reached Cuba.

Six months after the U.S. entry into World War II, Hemingway armed his cabin cruiser, Pilar, and spent two years hunting German U-boats in the Caribbean. Ernest Hemingway's spirit is very much alive in Key West today. Theodore Morris connects Faces of Florida, both present and throughout history, with the rich environment of the sunshine state. His portraits are about famous and not so famous people. He uses realistic natural elements as compositional components to create a lively and colorful tropical atmosphere. The Faces of Florida consist of all types of characters who make this tropical paradise a wonderful and culturally diverse landscape. Please note that exact colors may not transfer accurately on computer screens. "My two passions in life have always been art and history. In my paintings I have incorporated both these interests with an emphasis on the fascinating history of Florida." - Ted Morris Some of the artist's paintings and prints can be seen at the Mariners Manor gallery on St. George Street, St. Augustine, FL |
